Goldfish Lament

Another Magpie Tale

Take me out of the fishbowl,
Take me out to play.
Swimming in circles,
Day after day...
Is that all you think I can do?
Maybe it's true.

Take me out for a picnic,
Let me try pasta and steaks.
Swimming in circles,
Week after week...
I get so tired of flakes.
I'll manage somehow without teeth.

Let me smell the blue sky,
Let me feel the grass.
Swimming in circles,
Year after year...
Watching you live through the glass.
Is water so different from air?

  2. Dear T: I love this joyous song! Reminds me of "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" with much better lyrics. Such a great poem and song! Are you going to record this song; you definitely have the talent for writing music! Excellent!

  3. Dear T.

The 'Best" from the Best -- I love the sing song quality to this poem so sweet -- if a goldfish could talk I am sure this is what they would say.

  5. Thanks! But my kids don't like it when I sing -- I'll have to save the lyrics for when they start their own band.

My favourite line! Sometimes I feel like that happens to me too.
Seeing fish gulp down flakes, I wondered how they could enjoy them, but if you are hungry enough...

  14. I smiled at the thought of the fish eating pasta and steak. I guess flakes forever and ever would get pretty boring.
